The Olmsted Foundation continues to "culturally immerse" Academy Cadets

The George and Carol Olmsted Foundation consistently provides hundreds of thousands of dollars in funding to support the exposure of cadets to foreign cultures and foreign languages. The Foundation annually funds overseas travel and cultural immersion in non-English speaking countries around the world.

The Foundation's Vice President for Special Programs, Col. (Ret) Bob Stratton, visited the Academy on October 8th of last year for the Academy Assembly and officiated in presenting $10,000 to help underwrite the event. The Assembly is a four-day conference that brings together civilian undergraduate political science students and service academy cadets, senior government officials, scholars and policy practitioners from across the country.

Another highlight of Col. Stratton's visit last Fall was the unveiling of a new exhibit in the Permanent Professors Art Gallery in the renovated section on the 3rd floor of Fairchild Hall. The new exhibit features some displays by USAFA cadets who participated in last summer's Olmsted summer travel and cultural immersion program.Sometime early this year a new plaque recognizing Academy graduates who become Olmsted Scholars will be dedicated in the newly renovated section of Fairchild Hall.

"The Olmsted Foundation's strong partnership with the Academy and the AOG continues to provide outstanding young military leaders an unsurpassed opportunity to achieve fluency in a foreign language," said Col. Stratton. "It also allows them to pursue graduate study at an overseas university, and acquire an in-depth understanding of foreign cultures, thereby further equipping them to serve in positions of great responsibility as senior leaders in the United States Armed Forces."
Originally established in 1956, the Foundation is named for and endowed by the estate of Major General, USAR, (Ret) George H. Olmsted and his wife. The Foundation sponsors Active Duty Military Officers in a two year program for graduate studies at a foreign university in a foreign language, paying the university tuition, as well as providing grants for continued language study, travel and cultural immersion. Fundamental to the initial purpose of creating the scholarship program is the conviction that the greatest leaders must be educated broadly.

The Foundation also sponsors qualified Cadets and Midshipmen for shorter duration trips emphasizing overseas travel and exposure to foreign cultures. For more information about the Olmsted Foundation, visit their website.

Interesting to see this article. I spent yesterday escorting a fine group of USAFA Cadets around the embassy here in Dakar (and took them out to lunch, showed them the way back to their hotel through Friday 2pm prayers).

I quickly learned from their guide, CDR Sprague, that the Olmsted Foundation was one of the originators of such cultural immersion trips. It was great to unwittingly bring two facets of General Olmsted's vision together out here in West Africa. The cadets thought that was I was doing was "very cool" and I told them to keep the scholarship in mind as they progress in their military career. Thanks again, General Olmsted!
