Olmsted Scholars Participate at 47th NAFAC Symposium Posted: Sep 18, 2007 | Posted By: Dave Estep
The United States Naval Academy hosted its annual Foreign Affairs Conference (NAFAC) 9-13 April 2007. To help defray NAFAC costs, each year the George and Carol Olmsted Foundation provides financial support to this Midshipmen-run effort. This year, on behalf of the Naval Academy, Academic Dean Bill Miller and Alumni Association President George Watt accepted a $20,000 check from Olmsted Foundation President and CEO, RADM Larry Marsh, USN (Ret) (photo #1 in Media).
This year's theme, "Asia at the Crossroads", resonated with some of the Olmsted Foundation's more recent Scholars - Captain Jeremy Klomp, USAF (OSC 2004/Shanghai), and Major Brendan Mulvaney, USMC (OSC 2003/Shanghai). They both participated as Panel Advisers and summaries of their experiences and involvement are Attachments. CDR Mark Larabee, USN (OSC 1991/Lausanne), recently joined the faculty at USNA also helped with NAFAC and posed for a photo with his fellow Scholars (photo #2 in Media).
More senior Olmsted Scholars also lent support to the event. Admiral Carl Trost, USN, Ret. (OSC 1960/Freiburg); Rear Admiral Tom Marfiak, USN, Ret. (OSC 1973/Paris); and Captain Stan Weeks, USN, Ret. (OSC 1974/Madrid) all provided their insights and support during the conference.
NAFAC provides an outstanding opportunity for Olmsted Scholars to leverage their expertise and in-depth cultural knowledge. It is also a wonderful venue to showcase the Olmsted Foundation and Olmsted Scholar Program. The conference provides opportunities for Scholars to share their knowledge with young naval officer candidates, and other NAFAC participants, while reinforcing their overseas Scholar experience. Through financial donations and providing area expertise and knowledge, the Olmsted Foundation directly supports the Naval Academy in its quest to enrich future officers with knowledgeable perspectives about the world and how other countries and cultures view global issues.
