AboutUs : The Foundation

The George and Carol Olmsted Foundation is a registered 501(c)(3), non-profit, private foundation.

The Foundation was originally established by charter in 1956 in Washington, DC, and transferred its charter to Virginia in 1960.  The Foundation inaugurated the Olmsted Scholar Program in 1959, with the selection of the first class of Olmsted Scholars; the Olmsted Scholar Class of 1960.

The Foundation's mission is:

"To provide outstanding young military leaders an unsurpassed opportunity to achieve fluency in a foreign language, pursue graduate study at an overseas university, and acquire an in-depth understanding of foreign cultures, thereby further equipping them to serve in positions of great responsibility as senior leaders in the United States Armed Forces."

The Foundation sponsors Active Duty Military Officers in a two year program for graduate studies, overseas at foreign universities (see the Scholar Program for more details and information).  Prior to graduate studies, the officer will have up to one year of intensive, foreign language training.

The Foundation also sponsors qualified Cadets and Midshipmen for shorter duration trips emphasizing overseas travel and exposure to foreign cultures (see Undergraduate Program for more information and details).
