Olmsted Lecture Series

The most impactful way to understand the power of the Olmsted Scholar Program is to hear the Scholars talk about how it has positively affected their careers and lives. The Olmsted Lecture Series was created as an opportunity for the Olmsted Scholar community to share their stories with others, including the defense and national security community, Olmsted Scholars and potential Scholars.

Olmsted Lecture Series audiences will walk away from the events with a deeper understanding of how important the Olmsted experience is for young military leaders as they work their way up through greater positions of leadership and responsibility.

On October 20, 2014,
Col. Mike Hopkins
(USAF) kicked off the Series
as our featured speaker.
Col. Hopkins was a member
of the 2003 Olmsted Scholar
Class, spending his two years
in Parma, Italy.

The Olmsted Lecture Series Event

The National Press Club in Washington, DC, has played host to an array of leaders: Presidents, Premiers, Cabinet secretaries and leaders in the world of business and finance, making it the perfect location for the Olmsted Lecture Series.

On October 20, 2014, Col. Mike Hopkins (USAF) kicked off the Series as the featured speaker. Col. Hopkins was a member of the 2003 Olmsted Scholar Class, spending his two years in Parma, Italy.  In 2009, Col. Hopkins was selected by NASA and the US Air Force to train as an astronaut candidate at the Johnson Space Center, and on September 10, 2013, Col. Hopkins joined the 37th expedition to the International Space Station as a Flight Engineer.

The second Lecture Series presentation took place on November 16, 2015, with featured guest ADM Jim Stavridis.  ADM Stavridis currently serves as the Dean of the Fletcher School at Tufts University.  In his distinguished military career he has served in numerous advisory roles to the most senior Defense officials and in multiple command billets, culminating as the Supreme Allied Commander at NATO.  He is a renown expert on international relations and politics and has been an ardent supporter of the Olmsted Scholar program.
